Organization of American States

The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the independent nations of the Western Hemisphere to promote and uphold democratic values, protect human rights, and deal with shared problems such as drug trafficking, poverty, and terrorism. It is made up of 35 member nations, but Cuba has been suspended from participation since 1962, therefore only 34 participate actively and are represented in the General Assembly. English, Spanish, Portuguese and French are the four official languages of the OAS, representing the diversity in the culture and people of North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean that make up the Western Hemisphere.
